Holy Hannah!!! Sandhill Cranes In the Hill Towns of Massachusetts!!!

sandhill pair with color mediumSo here’s the deal, my friend Laura told me that she had sandhill cranes in her yard in Chesterfield all summer long.  After admonishing her for not telling me because I would have driven back from the Cape to see them (and she now probably thinks I’m even crazier than she thought), she found out they’re were still hanging around in Worthington!  So my friend Ann and I headed up to Worthington today even though it was a rainy, dreary day.  We couldn’t find them so we were heading home (I was looking at my Google Maps on my phone to figure out how to get home) when Ann hit the breaks… There they are she said.  And lo and behold…Eagle Eye Ann found the Sandhill Cranes in Worthington.  Of course, when a nice local stopped to see if we needed help, we told her of the cranes, and in a non-challant manor said, “Oh, yea, they’ve been hanging around here abouts all summer.”  So without further ado, here are the Sandhill Cranes of the Hill Towns!

Take a look their head bobbing and gliding strut.  It kinda reminds me of the rythm of a crosscountry skier:

Here’s some pics, remember, click on them to enlarge:

What a cute couple! Maybe for their honeymoon they decided to go to the Berkshires instead of to Wisconsin!?

It was such a wet day that one of the cranes decided to fluff up a bit!

About John Body

I live in Western Massachusetts, in the incredibly beautiful Connecticut River Valley. I've been hiking, kayaking, and tracking wildlife throughout the Valley with lots of photos and videos that people may like to see. Whenever I travel I also take my cameras just in case I see great scenery or wildlife. My passion is wildlife conservation so I try to attend wildlife workshops and land preservation events (Habitat, Habitat, Habitat!). When I get a chance, I videotape the experts, they're just so knowledgeable and inspiring. I hope you enjoy my posts.
